The last two days my druid Shribryn has run the Culling of Stratholme instance for the daily heroic. CoS used to be a very difficult dps race if you wanted to get to the extra boss with an extra badge and the chance to roll on the drake mount. Most people usually just /afk'ed if they had the drake as it was one of the longest instances due to the NPC interactions. Since 3.3 this instance has been pretty easy due to the change so the NPC don't get in the way anymore and the fact that our gear makes the instance a joke. The Culling of Stratholme was one of my favorite parts of Warcraft 3 so I'm glad they made the place more fun to visit but ultimately it is your party members that make up a pleasant experience. I definitely had to different experiences the last two days.
Yesterday I had a decent looking group ... pally tank, pally dps, me-druid heals, and two other dps I can't remember. A quick check of Elitist Group and I see the two pallies are well geared and the other dps is about average. I sit back for what I expect to be an easy run.
Now don't get me wrong ... it is almost impossible to have a wipe in CoS anymore if you have a good tank and good healer. Frankly I'm pretty confident that I could have two manned the instance with the pally tank. The issue was the other paladin. He was afk pretty much the whole time leading up to the first boss then did about half the dps I'd expect from someone with his gear. I thought that was as bad as it could get ... then he started talking.
"Can I ask you guys a question?"
"Sure", the tank responded. We slowed down our pulls for about 30 seconds as we waited.
"I just had sex with my girlfriend and is it normal for ....", he replied (I edited the last part as it was pretty gross).
It was obvious to me he was a 12 year old trolling for a response or trying to feel better about himself. The tank just answered. "Um ... no". But the dps pally kept at it. "She was screaming so loud I thought she really liked it but I wasn't sure if it was normal". I didn't know how to respond so I didn't. I could tell the pally tank was felt the same way as he started pulled 2 and 3 mobs at a time to get through the content faster. The dps pally didn't get it and kept at it. "She tells me I'm the best she's ever had." Luckily we are coming up to the extra boss and the pally tank just pulls without asking anyone if they are ready. A minute later the extra boss is dead and we are on our way to the final boss. The dps then says, "I hope no one is offended by my comments I was just curious what you guys thought." I thought to myself -- sure you do buddy. I look at the time -- It has been 14 minutes since we started the instance. I finally talk, "Hold up a sec everyone. I need to drink for mana." I really didn't need to drink, I just wanted to slow down. The reason everyone runs heroics is to get their daily frost badge. You get your frost badge on the last boss. The devil popped on my shoulder. Right-click Dps Pally - Kick from group. A few seconds later the message pops up ... motion passed and he is gone. We start the fight with 4 and a half second later the luckiest deathknight ever pops into the group. A minute later the final boss is dead and we say our goodbyes with no mention of the dps pally. It was probably better that way.
Fast forward to today. Similar group makeup with a hunter and just before the first boss I notice he is Misdirecting Aggro to Me. My first thought was to say something in party but an angel jumped on my shoulder. "Don't do it", she said. I stop and erase the comment I had started from the computer. Instead I whisper to him... "Just so you know, you are misdirecting to me." He's all embarrassed and switches it to the tank. I ask him about his misdirect macro's and he says he doesn't know how to do one. I give him a link to a site that has them and he thanks me. While the tank pulls groups, I heal him and the hunter dps'es but we talk the entire time about how to improve his spec to shot rotation theory. The rest of the run was totally uneventful and we parted ways at the end of the instance knowing that although we'd probably never meet again that we were friends.
These two runs show the good and the bad of the World of Warcraft. The game itself is only a tool ... it is up to the players to make it fun ... and kick the asshats.
